Square and Disney, you’ve done it again!

Hello all you Kingdom Hearts fans! It’s T-Man, here to review what is quite possibly one of the best games I’ve ever played in my life! Now, the Kingdom Hearts series was an extremely stupid idea that became a wonderful game. Kingdom Hearts II, like Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, follows the same path of greatness that the first game took. If you don’t have Kingdom Hearts I or Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, go buy them right now and don’t open up this review again until you beat them! Now, the reviewing shall begin!

Anyone ever heard of lip-matching?
Anyway, the graphics are great, especially the cutscenes. This game has a higher polygon count than the first (or so I’ve heard, because I don’t know anything about polygons). This game really shows off the PS2’s power at Port Royal (Pirates of the Caribbean world). They, along with Tron and Sark in Space Paranoids, are the most realistic looking characters in the game, but if they could do that with those characters, how come they didn’t do it with any other human characters? I guess cause it would look weird. Also, remember when the characters’ mouths would sometimes look like paper and just move up and down uncontrollably? Well, they still do that in this game. Regardless, the graphics are great.

1 Keyblade + 1 More Keyblade = AWESOMENESS!!
The gameplay is mostly the same as the first game, except for the new Drive system. Drives improve the gameplay greatly, all but one allowing you to use two Keyblades, the other allowing you to use your Keyblade as a gun. Overall, the gameplay is perfect, and the game has replay value to boot. Most (if not all) of the replay value has to do with filling out Jiminy’s Journal.

Nobody who?
The story is also really good. An evil group of Nobodies (the body and soul left behind when one becomes a Heartless) called Organization XIII is wreaking havoc and Sora, Donald, and Goofy must stop them at all costs. The story is actually better than that, but that’s all I can tell without spoiling anything.
My sanctuary, my sanctuary, yeah! (Line from the game’s theme)
The music is also great. “Sanctuary” (“Passion” in the Japanese version) is Utada Hikaru’s new masterpiece. Each world theme fits the level. The only problem I have with the music is the musicals in Atlantica. They all stink! The sound is fine, though.
Lovin’ it!
As for fun factor, you’re probably going to be loving most of the game. There may be a few parts that you won’t like, but the fun keeps coming back.

No controller-breaking involved…most of the time, at least.
Difficulty is generally medium, even on Proud Mode, the hardest game mode. However, some things, like the Sephiroth boss fight, can be quite difficult.
T-Man’s Pros and Cons:
Pros:
+ Great graphics
+ Great story
+ Decent fun factor
+ High replay value
+ New Drive system
+ New worlds
+ New secret ending…
Cons:
- …But you have to fill out Jiminy’s Journal to get it (at least on
Standard Mode)…
- …And to do that, you must beat Sephiroth
- Peoples’ mouths are still 2-D in some scenes
- None of the human characters look as good as those in Port Royal and Space Paranoids
- The whole concept of the Atlantica world. It’s fun, but I hate the songs.
Buy It/Rent It/Skip It/Smash It:
Even if you’re not a big fan, this game is a definite buy. If you didn’t care much for the first one or Chain of Memories, then you’d better just rent it, and if you didn’t like either game at all, skip it. Bye for now!
Rating: Awesome
