Yep, you heard it here folks! T-Man’s going to list his top ten R.P.G.s/action R.P.G.s of ALL TIME! This is gonna be so fun!

NOTE: This list has nothing to do with the amount of flaws a game has.

Numeral Diez (Number Ten): The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

Taking the place of number 10 on my list is the second-to-latest Zelda game. Let’s see. The game has over 100 secrets (including a secret item that can only be gotten after you beat the game!) and is just overall fun. Vaati (from Four Swords and Four Swords Adventures) makes a reappearance as the main villain. Ganon does not make an appearance in the game, but it doesn’t matter. The graphics are also great for a GBA game. The story is fine, but I’ve seen better in a Zelda game.

Numeral Nueve (Number Nine): Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

While my least favorite game in the series, this game still manages to make it into the top ten due to its intense amounts of fun present in most Square games, regardless of the degree. You play through the same worlds as the first game, from Traverse Town to Hollow Bastion (although the Deep Jungle and End of the World worlds are not present) but the makeup of the worlds’ rooms is messed with using Map Cards. In fact, the gameplay system, entering the worlds and everything is controlled completely by cards! The story takes place in Castle Oblivion, ruled by the Organization. Sora, Donald, and Goofy are there because a man in a black cloak said that they would meet people they hold dear. There’s a catch, though. The more floors they go up, the more memory they lose! Everything in Castle Oblivion is controlled by cards. Every once in a while (always after beating a boss in Castle Oblivion) you will be given World Cards, which are used to enter the memory-generated environments as you enter the floors. Now players can decide the order they do the worlds in (unless you are given only one card). The graphics are great. Somehow they made the cutscenes 3-D, looking almost exactly like the first game’s graphics, except blurrier, but it’s amazing that they could achieve such a thing nonetheless. They also managed to fit Utada Hikaru’s masterpiece, Simple and Clean, into the game’s itty bitty cartridge, vocals and all!

Numeral Ocho (Number Eight): Final Fantasy X

I’ve never beaten the game, but it’s really fun. The in-game graphics are good enough, but the cutscenes are beautiful. In the first cutscene, there is even an awesome rock song! Final Fantasy X has a different kind of level up system where you move characters’ circles across a grid and they will gain abilities or stats will level up, but it’s straightforward enough. Its story is also good.

Numeral Siete (Number Seven): Paper Mario

The second Mario R.P.G. delivered. For a Mario game, the story is good. As for gameplay, timing is the key to winning due to the return of Action Commands. The game’s graphics are OK, and the paper models are just fine.

Numeral Seis (Number Six): Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

It’s better than the first. It’s got a deeper plot, better graphics, and some new elements have been added to the gameplay system.

Numeral Cinco (Number Five): Kingdom Hearts

This game was a very good mix of Square and Disney characters. The graphics are great. The gameplay is great. The story is great. Everything is great. It may have been a stupid idea, but it’s just too fun. One COULD consider the Disney characters and Disney worlds a bit of a novelty, but they’re the whole things that make the game! And musical haters rejoice! There is no singing in this!

Numeral Quatro (Number Four): Final Fantasy IX

This game does away with the stupid magic-stocking system from Final Fantasy VIII and returns to the series’ routes. The game has a medieval setting again, with people who perform White Magic and people who perform Black Magic. You can name almost every character you get (as opposed to only being able to name the main character in VIII and X), you can have four party members at once again, and the characters are SD (super deformed) again. They supposedly made the characters SD again because this would be the last Final Fantasy on the PS1, and the graphical capabilities of the PS2 would not allow there to be any sense in the characters being SD.

Numeral Tres (Number Three): The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

One of the greatest games ever made, if you ask me. The game is a graphical masterpiece by the N64’s standards, and everything else about this game is also radical. The story is great, the gameplay is awesome, it’s just all-around great if you ask me.

Numeral Dos (Number 2): Kingdom Hearts II

This game expanded upon something that was already awesome to begin with. There are new worlds and more things to do. If one doesn’t do anything optional, the game will probably only last about 25 hours. However, if one does the optional things (Pride Lands, 100 Acre Wood, Atlantica, and anything that can only be done after completing Pride Lands) the game will take over 30 hours of your life. I recommend doing all the aforementioned things. If you don’t, don’t complain about the game being too short (if 25 hours is even considered too short). Just realize that you did nothing optional and go back and do them after you beat the game.

And now, da-da-da-da-da-da-da da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-DAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

NUMERAL UNO (NUMBER ONE): FINAL FANTASY VII

It’s true. My favorite R.P.G. of all of time is Final Fantasy VII. It may not be as long as VIII and IX (three discs as opposed to four), but it’s way more fun, with a lot of sidequests, including two secret characters! It may not have the best graphics ever, but it’s just so fun. The Materia system is an easy way to use magic. I’ve never beaten the game (the second-to-last boss is way too hard!), but I know that this is the best R.P.G. of all time.

Who doesn’t love a good role-playing adventure? No one, that’s who. These are my favorite R.P.G.s and action R.P.G.s. If there is a single one of the games on the list that you don’t have, go out and buy it right now. Every game on this list is a must-have.
