Monster House is My Favorite Movie of all Time

T-Man’s back! And he’s reviewing the best movie he’s ever seen! Monster House is pure glory. Honestly, though, it should have been released closer to Halloween instead of last summer. Of course, I think the DVD was released about that time, so it doesn’t really matter.

Cars has nothing on this!

The visuals of this movie are some of the best I’ve ever seen. Monster House uses the same performance capture (the act of inserting an actor’s movements or facial expressions over an animated character to make the characters look more realistic) animation that The Polar Express used, except made less realistic so that the audience isn’t freaked out by the characters’ looks (I honestly don’t know why The Polar Express freaked them out, though), and it mostly does a good job. It’s very realistic-looking. The only problem is that the hair of some of the characters looks like claymation, but this is a CGI animated Halloween movie, not The Nightmare Before Christmas!

Modern, very modern.

Before I comment, let me tell you the story of the movie: Mr. Nebbercracker is a mean old man who dislikes children. Most of the time, people drop stuff on his lawn and then go on it to get it back, but he scares them away and takes whatever got on his lawn. When DJ’s friend Chowder’s basketball lands on Mr. Nebbercracker’s lawn, DJ goes to get it, but Mr. Nebbercracker comes out and grabs DJ and holds him up and starts interrogating him, only to stop abruptly when he has a heart attack (or stroke) and appears to die, but DJ thinks he killed him. Later, starting with a mysterious phone call that was nothing but groans, DJ begins to think that Mr. Nebbercracker is back from the dead and haunting him, his spirit having possessed his house, which eats anything that comes near. That’s all I can tell without spoiling. Now, for the comments. Watch an old Disney musical, and then watch this. You’ll notice that the humor style is very different.

Here are a few examples:

1) When the children are trying to convince Jenny (the red-haired girl) that the house is a monster when she walks up to it, she says, “Are you guys mentally challenged? If you are, I’m certified to teach you baseball.”
2) When DJ and Chowder are spying on Mr. Nebbercracker’s house and DJ’s babysitter comes in, they talk some and DJ says, “We haven’t left the room all night, not even to go to the bathroom,” during which his babysitter picks up what was once a bottle of Mountain Dew (now a bottle of pee) and he says, “Don’t drink that.”
See? I’ve noticed that many recent CGI movies have this smarter and funnier style.

T-Man’s Pros and Cons:

Pros:

+ The animation is just great
+ Very original
+ Has the new style of humor

Cons:

- The characters’ hair looks like it is claymated

Watch It/Skip It:

Watch, watch, watch, watch, watch, WATCH!!!! This is a great movie for the whole family to watch together (despite many complaining that it should have been rated PG-13 for a plethora of reasons, but that’s bull)! I also suggest buying the DVD to see the special features.

SHINE!

Do I HAVE to tell you who I am every time I write a review? Okay…it’s T-MAN! Memorized it? Good! Now, unless you live in a place where there are no games whatsoever, you have at least heard of Mario. Well, remember the good ol’ days when Mario was in 2-D? Remember when he more recently went to 3-D on the N64? Well, he’s in 3-D again in Super Mario Sunshine. Read on to learn more.

Ohh, shiny!

The graphics in this game are really good. The characters look shiny, as does everything else. In fact, this game has a lot to do with brightness!

Squirting water has never been this much fun!

Gameplay in this game mostly revolves around using FLUDD to solve Isle Delfino’s problems. You press R to squirt. You use FLUDD to kill enemies and to clean up doodoo. There are also multiple nozzles for FLUDD that allow him to perform specific actions. You start with the normal and Hover nozzles, but have to unlock the other two. The game also has high replay value, consisting entirely of getting all the Shine Sprites.

Isle Delfino in peril!

The story is pretty good. Mario, Peach, and Toadsworth are heading off to Isle Delfino on vacation, but when they stop at the airstrip, they encounter a strange goop. Mario then encounters FLUDD, the Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device, and uses it to clean the goop and grabs a strange shiny object. He is then taken to court, where he is accused of a crime he did not commit. A perpetrator, suspected to be Mario, has covered the island in a strange goop. Because of this, the guardians of the island, the Shine Sprites, have left the Shine Gate, encasing Isle Delfino in a vale of darkness. Mario is forced to clean the island, and along the way he must collect Shine Sprites and stop the real perpetrator, a fake Mario dubbed Shadow Mario.

Sounds right.

The music in this game is fine. Each level’s theme sounds like that level. The sound is also fine.

Yay! Everlasting fun!

The game is really fun, and the fun keeps going on. Every level and every mission is perfectly fine.

Ah, I died again! Am I the worst gamer on the face of the planet?!

As for difficulty, most of the game is easy. The very last level is the only hard part in the game.

T-Man’s Pros and Cons:

Pros:

+ Good graphics
+ Decent story
+ Fun gameplay
+ Nice music
+ Everlasting fun
+ High replay value

Cons:

- Difficulty is generally low
- Your reward for getting all 120 Shine Sprites is a rip off

Buy It/Rent It/Skip It/Smash It:

If you are a Mario fan, this is the perfect buy. If not, it’s a rent. If you HATE Mario (which is unlikely) this is a skip. Bye-bye!

Papel de Greatness

Heeeeeeere’s T-Man! Before reviewing, I must talk to Mario. What happened, Mario? Six years ago, you became papery, and you’re papery again. THIS IS HORRIBLE! CALL THE DOCTOR! Just kidding. Paper Mario is one of the best divisions of the Mario series, part of a bigger series consisting of every other Mario R.P.G., from Super Mario R.P.G. on the Super NES to Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time on the DS. However, most just consider the three Paper Mario games (Paper Mario, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Super Paper Mario) their own separate series. This review is for the second game in the series, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and it will begin now.

Oh, papercut!

The graphics are great, with the 3-D environments looking good and the 2-D character models looking better than in the first. The game actually references the fact that the characters are made of paper through a few powers Mario gets throughout the game. One bad guy, Hooktail, has two “sheets of paper” making up his head, with a large hole where the top of his head should be.

Turn Mario into an R.P.G.

and you’ve got a great game.

Gameplay in this game is great. Timing is the key to winning. The Action Command returns, but what Mario R.P.G. doesn’t have the Action Command? Anyway, you have two basic attack commands, jumping and hammering, which each have their own Action Command. You can also use an item or select “Tactics” to defend, run away, change partner, etc. You can also save after beating the final boss, and there are troubles to solve and the Pit of 100 Trials to complete.

A Mario game with a deep plot? Nah.

The game has a much deeper plot than past Mario games, and Bowser (although he still appears, so don’t be disappointed, old-school gamers!) is no longer the main villain. Peach sends Mario a letter telling him that she is heading somewhere on vacation and the first stop was a town called Rogueport, built over the ruins of a once-great city, with a large door in it. She has a map that she found with it, and wants to look for treasure with Mario. Mario goes to Rogueport and Princess Peach is nowhere in sight. After rescuing a girl Goomba, he, the Goomba, and a professor take the magical map to the Thousand-Year Door in the sewers, which are also the ruins of the once-great city I mentioned earlier, and it points to one of the Crystal Stars, seven objects that must be collected to open the Thousand-Year Door and get the treasure within. Mario later learns that Princess Peach has been captured by the X-Nauts, a group of evil people led by Grodus, who Mario must defeat. That’s all I can say without spoiling.

Mario has a voice!

There’s nothing wrong with the music or the sound, and guess what? Mario has a voice in this one!

Annoying at times, but still fun.

As for fun factor, this game is very enjoyable. There are a few annoying things you have to do (mostly with the troubles. Other than that, the story is quite linear, which isn’t a problem). For instance, in chapter 2, there’s one part where you are in these woods and you have to go to this big tree only to find that the door inside it is locked, but there’s a secret entrance blocked by an invisible thing that only a certain character can move, so you have to continue through the forest to that character’s house only to find that she won’t leave her house until her necklace that she lost is found, so you have to go all the way back through the forest filled with enemies whether you killed them before or not to the second section of the forest where you have to fight three girls, one of which has the necklace. Then you have to go ALL the way back to the character’s house and deliver the necklace.

T-Man’s Pros and Cons:

Pros:

+ Good graphics, with improved character models
+ Good gameplay
+ Good story
+ Really fun
+ Music is fine
+ You can save after the last boss and continue the game

Cons:

- Last boss doesn’t give many Star Points
- Some things you have to do are annoying

Buy It/Rent It/Skip It/Smash It:

Definitely a buy. If you loved the first, you’ll probably love this. However, if you didn’t, you won’t like this one. However, this game is better than the first, so rent it, even if you didn’t like the first.

Square and Disney, you’ve done it again!

Hello all you Kingdom Hearts fans! It’s T-Man, here to review what is quite possibly one of the best games I’ve ever played in my life! Now, the Kingdom Hearts series was an extremely stupid idea that became a wonderful game. Kingdom Hearts II, like Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, follows the same path of greatness that the first game took. If you don’t have Kingdom Hearts I or Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, go buy them right now and don’t open up this review again until you beat them! Now, the reviewing shall begin!

Anyone ever heard of lip-matching?

Anyway, the graphics are great, especially the cutscenes. This game has a higher polygon count than the first (or so I’ve heard, because I don’t know anything about polygons). This game really shows off the PS2’s power at Port Royal (Pirates of the Caribbean world). They, along with Tron and Sark in Space Paranoids, are the most realistic looking characters in the game, but if they could do that with those characters, how come they didn’t do it with any other human characters? I guess cause it would look weird. Also, remember when the characters’ mouths would sometimes look like paper and just move up and down uncontrollably? Well, they still do that in this game. Regardless, the graphics are great.

1 Keyblade + 1 More Keyblade = AWESOMENESS!!

The gameplay is mostly the same as the first game, except for the new Drive system. Drives improve the gameplay greatly, all but one allowing you to use two Keyblades, the other allowing you to use your Keyblade as a gun. Overall, the gameplay is perfect, and the game has replay value to boot. Most (if not all) of the replay value has to do with filling out Jiminy’s Journal.

Nobody who?

The story is also really good. An evil group of Nobodies (the body and soul left behind when one becomes a Heartless) called Organization XIII is wreaking havoc and Sora, Donald, and Goofy must stop them at all costs. The story is actually better than that, but that’s all I can tell without spoiling anything.

My sanctuary, my sanctuary, yeah!

(Line from the game’s theme)

The music is also great. “Sanctuary” (“Passion” in the Japanese version) is Utada Hikaru’s new masterpiece. Each world theme fits the level. The only problem I have with the music is the musicals in Atlantica. They all stink! The sound is fine, though.

Lovin’ it!

As for fun factor, you’re probably going to be loving most of the game. There may be a few parts that you won’t like, but the fun keeps coming back.

No controller-breaking involved…most of the time, at least.

Difficulty is generally medium, even on Proud Mode, the hardest game mode. However, some things, like the Sephiroth boss fight, can be quite difficult.

T-Man’s Pros and Cons:

Pros:

+ Great graphics
+ Great story
+ Decent fun factor
+ High replay value
+ New Drive system
+ New worlds
+ New secret ending…

Cons:

- …But you have to fill out Jiminy’s Journal to get it (at least on
Standard Mode)…
- …And to do that, you must beat Sephiroth
- Peoples’ mouths are still 2-D in some scenes
- None of the human characters look as good as those in Port Royal and Space Paranoids
- The whole concept of the Atlantica world. It’s fun, but I hate the songs.

Buy It/Rent It/Skip It/Smash It:

Even if you’re not a big fan, this game is a definite buy. If you didn’t care much for the first one or Chain of Memories, then you’d better just rent it, and if you didn’t like either game at all, skip it. Bye for now!

Yeahhhhhh, it’s T-Man, and I mean what I said above. Critics frantically ranted and raved about Shadow the Hedgehog’s stinkiness, but I got and enjoyed it anyway. Same case scenario with this game. Although this game has more bad stuff than good stuff, the good stuff totally DOMINATES the bad stuff, making it a Pretty Good. However, it isn’t as good as Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Sonic Adventure was the first game I ever played. You can call me a diehard fan. You can even call me an INSANELY diehard fan. You can even call me just plain insane (Not really). No matter what you say, you won’t change my opinion. I’m one of the few people who managed to find something in this game, and although I noticed quite a bit of bad things about it, it was good for me and I recommend it to anyone who really likes Sonic.

A 360 game? I don’t think so.

Looking at the opening scene, you’ll think that this will be one of the most amazing-looking games you’ll ever play (the cutscenes look like dang Pixar movies!), but you’re more than wrong. The in-game graphics aren’t very good, but not very bad either, although CERTAINLY not worthy of the Xbox 360/PS3. I can easily liken them to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater: American Wasteland, for the people look almost exactly, if not exactly, the same. At least the grass is drawn better in this game…

Just an ordinary slow-mo.

NOTE: That is a phrase from an old Sonic cartoon.

The gameplay is almost exactly the same as every other Sonic game ever made, except slower. Sega said that it would have a greater sense of speed than any other Sonic game, but the final product was much slower. It may run faster than the old Genesis games, but not as fast as other 3-D Sonic games, that’s for sure! Sega lied! Also, the Towns (like the Adventure Fields in Sonic Adventure 1, except much bigger) are easy to get lost in (mainly in the first one). Anyway, the gameplay differs slightly between Sonic and Shadow. Shadow uses vehicles sometimes. Silver’s gameplay differs greatly. He uses his psychokenesis to solve puzzles. This may sound good, and can be good, but it can also be boring. This game does have high replay value, however, which consists of getting Gold Medals, completing all Town Missions, etc. to get all of the Achievements.

What? This game has a story?

AWESOME!

The game has a few pros, though, and one of them is the story, but I really don’t wanna tell you about it. This game has received slower sales than other Sonic games, so I hope my review will influence more people to buy it, and then they can see the story for themselves.

In this world *His world*

(Line from game’s theme)

The game also has a good soundtrack. The best song in the whole game is “Dream of an Absolution,” Silver’s theme. “His World,” the theme of Sonic, and “All Hail Shadow,” the theme of Shadow, are pretty good. The level themes are also pretty good.

Yay, a good part! Oh no, a bad part!

Fun factor will vary between stages. There will be some that you like and some that you won’t. Some Town Missions can be fun, but the Towns themselves are annoying because you can easily get lost in them.

Oh no! I broke my controller again!

Guess I’ve gotta get another one.

The game is really hard sometimes, especially in the Super Speed Zones. If you hit a wall, you lose your Rings, and if you hit it again, you die. It’s especially hard when you’re trying to get a good score/"S" rank. Glitches also make this game harder. In the Super Speed Zones, you’ll often find Sonic going through a wall and falling to his death. Sonic’s Kingdom Valley was the hardest Super Speed Zone in the game, and the very first time I won that level, the game froze before I could save. Talk about aggravating!

T-Man’s Pros and Cons:

Pros:

+ Good story
+ Good soundtrack
+ High replay value
+ Gameplay is mostly the same as past Sonics (the Towns and Town Missions differentiate it)
+ Can be fun

Cons:

- Graphics not worthy of an Xbox 360 title
- Slower than Sega said it would be
- Towns are too big and you can’t bring up the whole maps of them
- Silver’s gameplay is boring sometimes
- No reward for getting all Gold Medals except for an Achievement
- Really hard
- Loads a lot, not to mention the load times being long
- Really glitchy

Buy It/Rent It/Skip It/Smash It:

If you like Sonic, then what the hey? Go ahead. Of course, you have to play as people other than Sonic, and that was one of the complaints about many recent Sonic games. If you hate that, then you might want to either stay away or rent first so that you know what you’re doing. Besides, a lot of people hate this game, so I would recommend, even for diehard fans, to rent it first and then buy it if you like it. Don’t listen to other reviewers. This game, in my opinion, is somewhat underrated.

Rating: Pretty Good
