September's Top Ten: T-Man's Top Ten Sonic Games

Hola! Hehe. Anyway, I’m sorry I didn’t have an August top ten. I kept forgetting to tell Dad to update my site, and when I did he couldn’t. Either way, as you already know, I’m a diehard Sonic fan. When I was playing Sonic Next-Gen, I thought “Hey, I think I oughta do a top ten Sonic games for my site!” The aforementioned game will not appear on this list, even though I DO like it. I’ve done this once, on the 4Kids Forum (which has been redesigned and now that post is gone), and now I think I should do it here, too.

Number 10: Sonic CD (SEGA CD/Mega-CD)

Oh, yeah! This is my favorite of the old Sonic games. The CD technology allowed for faster gameplay than its older brothers Sonic 1 and 2, and the time travel concept kept things interesting, as well as pushing the advantages of CD technology further by adding one of the best soundtracks in Sonic history, right behind Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Next-Gen. I’ve heard some bits and pieces of the Japanese soundtrack, too, and some of it is better (particularly the ending theme in contrast to the acoustic version of Sonic Boom), but most of it is blah. Moving on, now…

Number 9: Sonic Battle (GBA)

While I don’t own the game (my cousin has it), I’ve played it, and it’s really cool. You duke it out in an area and up to four enemies are fought. In Story Mode, the first to get ten points wins. You set up the characters moves before you begin each battle. But on top of that, it was FUN.

Number 8: Sonic Advance (GBA)

While not as good as the two following Sonic Advance games, this game was very good on its own merits. It was fast. It was furious. It had four playable characters. The graphics were eye-popping, and there were six new stages for you to burn up. Unfortunately enough, I can’t get the seven Chaos Emeralds. Maybe someday…

Number 7: Sonic Advance 2 (GBA)

Sonic Advance 2 was basically the same as Sonic Advance 1, except better. Introducing new character Cream, and having a new boss engine, it was really cool, the fun factor being upped from the original and seven new stages added.

Number 6: Sonic Advance 3 (GBA)

Once again, the fun factor was kicked up a notch, and yet another set of seven stages were created for this pack. You were also able to make a team of two characters, which gave your character different moves and attributes. While this was neat, I think I’d rather go solo.

Number 5: Sonic Rush (DS)

Awesomeness! My favorite 2-D Sonic game so far! Yet ANOTHER set of seven stages was added, and it was faster than even Sonic Advance 3! This used the neat 2.5D setup later used by New Super Mario Bros. It also introduced newcomer Blaze the Cat. I was actually able to find all seven Chaos Emeralds in this one, and played the super-cool final boss.

Number 4: Shadow the Hedgehog (GCN, PS2, XBOX)

YES! This is in my top ten! It’s just as fun as the other 3-D Sonic games, despite camera and control problems being SLIGHTLY magnified. The branching paths were fun to take, despite some of the missions being frustrating or kind of dumb. And the guns were fun to use, too. I know most will disagree with me, but I’m a diehard, as you should already know.

Number 3: Sonic Heroes (GCN, PS2, XBOX)

This would be more likely to be in someone’s top ten than the last one. This was super fun, and filled with high speed action, and the team-based gameplay was interesting, but like I said with Sonic Advance 3, I’d rather go solo.

Number 2: Sonic Adventure 2 (DC)

While not exactly as fun as its big brother, it was still really, really fun, fun, fun! Tails and Eggman were easier than E-102 Gamma in SA1, and Big was no longer a playable character (quadruple yay with a capital ‘Y’). So, yeah, it had its improvements (mostly with the Big thing), and it had Shadow, of course, but still, it wasn’t as fan as……

NUMBER 1: SONIC ADVENTURE (DREAMCAST)

Even though it was relatively the same as SA2, it was more fun for some reason. I guess cause it had better stages. But it still had its flaws. It AND SA2 had various camera, collision, and control problems, but they don’t pop up that often. And Big the Cat is the most glaring flaw that game has. On a side note, this is the VERY FIRST game I ever played!

Well, there you have it: my top ten Sonic games. Next runner-ups are Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic 1 and 2, Sonic Shuffle, and Sonic Next-Gen, but they don’t quite hit the mark, and the Game Gear games hardly even come close (even though they’re still good on their own merits).

Rats of NIMH is one of my favorite books!

Hey! It’s-a me! T-Man! And I’m-a reviewing my third-favorite book! There’s also a movie adaptation called The Secret of NIMH (that is almost an entirely different story than the book) that is also really good and you should check it out, too. Anyhow…

The frost on the ground is beginning to melt, which can only mean one thing: Moving Day. Moving Day is the day that Farmer Fitzgibbon plows the ground after the frost melts, which means all the animals must move somewhere else (duh). Well, Mrs. Frisby’s (the main character whose husband disappeared) youngest son, Timothy, lies ill with pneumonia, and, according to Mr. Ages (a mouse scientist who gives Mrs. Frisby medicine to bring down Timmy’s fever) he must stay in bed and keep warm for three weeks (hmm, not much fun for the little guy, huh?), for if he gets too cold, even after he finishes taking the medicine, the pneumonia will come back worse than before. Moving Day is only going to be five days later, but that’s not enough time, so Jeremy (a crow that Mrs. Frisby helps by freeing him when he is tangled up in a string) takes her to the Great Owl for advice. At first, the owl says to bundle Timmy up and take him out to go to their summer home regardless and hope for the best, but when he is told that she is Mrs. Jonathan Frisby (Jonathan was her husband’s name), he tells her to inquire with the rats who live in the rosebush in the Fitzgibbons’ yard, and tells her to tell them to move her cinder block house to the lee of the stone near her house. And those rats…there’s something weird about them. That’s all I will spoil! Read the dang book if you wanna know more!

The Wii and the PS3

I Finally Get My Hands on Twilight Princess...

…And three words describe it: Greatest…Game…Ever. Hearing those three words, you’d probably go out and get this game right now. But still, let’s make it a review, shall we? But first, there is something you must know: I didn’t buy the game yet. My cousin got it, and I played it. Anyway…

For one thing, it has the best story in the entire Zelda universe. Sadly, my cousin has dropped around a few spoilers of this great story, which I dare not give to you. An evil dictator named Zant has covered the world in twilight. Without the light, the Hylians have taken spirit forms. Sounds good enough, right? Well, it’s not JUST the story. The story is told in such a way that it boosts up the quality a huge amount. Some people say that it needs spoken dialogue. Well, news flash, IT DOESN’T!!!

Link wants you to throw him a grape!

Link is all grown up throughout the entire game this time around, and a few characters from his village play an important role, such as his child friends Colon and Malo, and another friend who is closer to his age: Ilia. But the best friend he has this time around (in my opinion) is Midna. Midna helps Link escape from his prison cell during your first visit to the Twilight Realm, and decides to tag along on Link’s back in the Twilight Realm, and as a shadow in the Light Realm, and she sometimes gives you important advice or allows you to jump high in certain places as Wolf Link. Her personality and attitude make her one of the coolest characters in the Zelda series. While she IS like Navi and Tatl (from OoT and Majora’s Mask), she’s not NEAR as annoying.

Sound-wise, not much emphasis is put on it. Some pretty good-sounding MIDI tunes are scattered around, and the sound is good enough to suffice for a game released at its point in time. Many sounds, such as Midna giggling or the classic Zelda “I found a secret!” or “I opened a barred door!” chime are heard through the Wii Remote’s speaker, which is overall neat.

Aren't you guys supposed to be extinct?

And while the game is a first generation Wii game, these graphics are some of the most beautiful on the console, even now. While it may have a lower polygon count than some other games on the console, aside from that, it’s almost like 360 graphics! But is this because the Wii has a lot of power? Did Nintendo fool us by saying that it wouldn’t be as powerful as other consoles? Well, uh…no. Me and my cousin believe the game looks so great because of its beautiful artstyle, which makes much of the game look next gen.

But it all boils down to one thing: the gameplay. With games, good graphics and good story are something one wants to see, but if the game doesn’t have good gameplay, it’s just not good. This game has WONDERFUL gameplay. The Wii rundown?

Flick the Wii Remote to take out your sword. Flick it again to swing it. Wiggle the Nunchuck to do a spin attack. The A Button has various functions, and B shoots arrows and other projectiles. The 1 Button brings up the Dungeon Map, and I don’t remember what 2 does. The - Button brings up the item screen, but I forget the + Button’s function. You use Z to target your enemy, and you automatically hold up your shield when doing so. There are also some neat new moves like the Shield Attack, which use either the Nunchuck or Wii Remote to use. Fishing is also done with the Wii Remote, but I don’t care for fishing. You also aim certain items (such as the Bow or Slingshot) with the Wii Remote.

Being a wolf isn’t as fun as being a human, but hey, at least Midna rides on your back the whole time. Anyway, you swing the Wii Remote to claw your enemies, though I use the Jump Attack a lot as Wolf Link. You can still do a spin attack, this time with your tail. Occasionally, you’ll need Midna to guide you across a series of chasms, so you press up on the Control Pad and she’ll help you jump over a series of gaps. You can also use “Sense Mode” to find places you can dig or talk to the spirits of Hylians.

Also, there are new items, and others have been changed. Please note that I have seen most of these things while watching my cousin play. The Boomerang was changed to the Gale Boomering, which acts much like the regular Boomerang, but creates a tornado when thrown. The Hookshot has been changed to the Clawshot, which has a claw on the end. Some new items include the Spinner, which allows you to scale certain nooks, and Water Bombs, a type of bomb you can use underwater.

Honestly, reading about it, it may not seem so great, but just buy it, and you’ll see! You probably won’t think it’s the greatest game ever, like me, but trust me on this: BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
